To Freeman, you are correct about the silver, but this was prior to the vast amount of silver mined in 'The New World', especially the USA. Silver is so abundant today that nobody can corner the market on it to control it like they are doing with gold today. Some tried to in the 1980's and failed.

The only problem with this is Britains currency was NOT based on Gold but Silver - thats why the pound is called "Sterling" as in Silver.
